How Do I Connect My iPhone To POP/IMAP Mailbox?
This article applies to POP/IMAP mailboxes on Exchange accounts only.
This article describes the steps for setting up a POP/IMAP mailbox on an iPhone.
Note: If you configure the iPhone with the IMAP protocol, it will mark the messages for deletion, instead of deleting them immediately. By default, when you create an IMAP or Exchange account on the iPhone, messages you delete are purged from the server after one week. The result is that messages you delete on the iPhone won't disappear from your Exchange mailbox when you view them using Outlook, Entourage, or OWA.

This article describes the steps for setting up a POP/IMAP mailbox on an iPhone.
- On the iPhone, go to Home screen > Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Accounts > Add Account > Other.
- Select Add Mail Account and then add the following information:
- Name: The user’s Display Name.
- Address: The user’s email address.
- Password: Mailbox password.
- Description: How you want to identify the specific email account, for example "work," or "home email."
- Select the protocol (POP or IMAP).
Then fill in the required settings:- Incoming Mail Server
- Host Name: Enter your incoming mail server.
- Username: The user's email address.
- Password: The user's mailbox password.
- Outgoing Mail Server
- Host Name: Enter your outgoing mail server.
- Username: The user's email address.
- Password: The user's mailbox password.
Note: Your ISP may have blocked SMTP traffic through port 25 in your area. If this is the case, add ":465" (without quotes) to the end of your Outgoing Mail Server Host Name, like this: your_outgoing_server:465
This will ensure that outgoing SMTP traffic will go through alternate port 465 instead. - Incoming Mail Server
- To complete the setup process, click Next and wait for the iPhone to test your incoming and outgoing mail settings and connect to your mailbox.

To change this behavior:
- From the Home screen, choose Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- Choose your Exchange/IMAP account.
- Tap Advanced and tap Remove, then choose a time when you want deleted messages to be removed permanently from the iPhone: after one day, one week, or one month. Your deleted messages will be removed from the server according to the interval you set on the device.
