Transferring Without Downtime
We want your transition from your current host, or your self-hosted server, to be as smooth and painless as possible. Webhosting is supposed to be fun, after all--and having periods where your site is unavailable is the antithesis of fun. So we have some advice concerning your move to Ventue Domain Hosting.
Manually moving your site via FTP:1. Download a copy of your website with your favorite FTP editor. If you do not have one, FileZilla is a nice one to use.
2. Upload your website into the public_html folder of your new account with us.
Let's focus on email and any databases now:
1. In your new account with us, recreate any mailboxes that you have using the same passwords.
2. For the old host, set up any mail programs such as Outlook or Thunderbird to use the IP for that account - or you can add forwarders to those email addresses and have them go to an outside address such as a gmail account. Both methods will ensure that you do not lose email during propagation.
3. If you have sites like forums or blogs you will want to place those in maintenance while making this move so not to lose signups or posts during propagation.
4. Get backups of any databases, if you need help restoring them once you have them request assistance from Technical Support.
Let's get the DNS changed now:
1. Go to your registrar and change the nameservers (DNS) to the dns supplied in your Welcome Email.
2. Please give your site 72 hours to propagate. The website itself may only take 24 hours, but email can take the full 72 hours. A good rule of thumb would be that when you do not see email coming to the old account mailboxes for at least 24 hours it is safe to close that account. If you do not have that much time it should still be relatively safe as most servers will try to send mail several times over a 48 hour time period.
